Jan;
If it is a three speed, and has an aluminum case,
then you already know that it doesn't belong to your car. The three speed
Torqueflyte was introduced in late 56' and would have had a cast iron case if it
came out in that year. The aluminum case ones, I believe, came out in 1962, the
prior ones were all cast iron, a shop manual, likely on the OIC site, will
tell you where to look for identification. Your car had a two speed Powerflyte, same as my 54', but had a
lever sticking out of the dash instead of a column shift or push buttons. The
cheaper cars used this two speed until the early sixties when I guess the 904
Torqueflyte came out.
If your car is indeed a 55' it should have a slot
in the dash on the right side of the steering column. The 56's had the
pushbutton assembly mounted at the bottom of the dash to the left of the
steering column. Personally I hate anything where people have bastardised it
without documenting how they carried it out, it makes it almost impossible even
for a pro to repair it if something goes wrong. My inclination is to put it back
to original specs but it is your car, and if it works fine, I would leave it
alone until something breaks.
