My current '63 has the same setup as yours. Yes, the shoes are a bit
wider. But, the hydraulics are identical. I've got a good pedal and it stops
fine and straight. Same way with my old Crown that I had and used as a daily
driver for over 10 years. You CAN get good brakes from a factory system in
'62.
If your pedal is soft, you've got air in the system. Air gets trapped in
the bends near the master cylinder and down near the wheel cylinders. I
recommend picking up a power-bleeder. It uses air to force-bleed the system.
But, you should also be able to get good results with a two-man solution: one
person pumping up the brakes and another breaking loose the bleeder screws.
Don't be afraid to go through a quart of fluid during this operation. And,
stay with DOT-3 even with the temptation to go with DOT-5. The '63 FSM is
online for consultation here:
Be sure you've got the self-adjusters to the proper tightness before
starting this procedure. That could help a lot in getting a good pedal. Above
all, don't give up and let the group help you get as much "stop" as you've got
"go" :-)

OK Ok I'll try working with the Bendix Brakes a littler harder. Hoping
the pedal gets harder.
