Since I assume you sent him the check via the US Post Office that comstitutes a Federal Crime. You can report this fraudulent transaction to the Postmaster General via the Internet on the web site. Due to the amount from what I have heard nothing will be directly done per say, they will be added to a list, with enough of these complaints "eventually" something may be done about it.
