Re: IML: Tapered axles ended in 1963, thinks I

1964 was the last year for the tapered axle on B body Mopars (Plymouth,
Dodge), pre-C body (Dodge 880, Chrysler) and D body (Imperial). With the
1965 models Mopar went with flanged axles across the board.

AMC never swtiched as they had them on the 1988 AMC Eagle, last AMC built.
The drum could be removed without removing the hub though. Studebaker
switched to flanged axles in mid-1965.

The rear drum is a press-fit onto the hub which has the wheel lugs. This
hub is actually what you are removing from a tapered axle and the drum comes
with it. However, there has been more than one instance of someone finding
their rear drums not firmly attached to the hub and thus the drum can come
off the hub without having to use a hub puller to remove the hub and drum
assembly.

1964 was the last year for tapered axles. All of my 64 Mopars have then, 64
Crown Coupe, 64 Belvedere, 64 Fury, 64 Sport Fury.

Was 1963 was the last year for tapered axles?

My 1964, 1970, and 1973 all have similar rear bendix brakes that fit over
the lug studs and remove by hand when the wheel is off the car already.

Yes it is, '64 was the last year for it in Imperial. I AMC continued with it
for a long time after that.
