RE: IML: 80s EFI timed stalling

That it happened on a 440 makes me feel a little better. At least it's probably not an EFI problem. I know Rolland Westra and somebody else solved the same problem, but I can't find out. They theorized that it had to do with the transition from open loop to closed loop. It does seem to happen before the computer mileage improves. Happened again. Belt Parkway this time. Seems to only happen when coasting rather than when on the gas.

I had a very similar problem with my '75 Dodge 440. It finally stopped when
I swapped out the distributor. Since the pick-up was almost $20.00 and the
complete rebuilt Distributor was $40.00 I went with the whole assembly. I
still don't really know why this happened. Every time it did and I checked
the resistance on the pick-up it was fine, as were the other electronics.
Go figure?

Tom

I put a new Mopar mini-starter in my '82 and it now starts every time. Knock
wood. It does seem to crank slightly long which may have contributed to the
demise of the prior starter and the missing tooth on the flywheel. Before I
parked it to do the starter, I began having a problem where the car would
stall after 5-10 minutes and not re-start. The car stalls like you flipped
a switch. After a short wait of an additional 5 minutes or so, it will
usually re-start and run fine for the rest of the day. I seem to remember
this problem cropping up with one or two 80s Imperials - Rolland? - but I
don't remember seeing the solution and haven't been able to find the
solution in the archives. Help, please! Dick B., Bob, anybody?

It seems to be ignition because the fuel drizzle trick does not help and one
time I pulled a plug wire and wasn't getting spark, but it's so intermittent
it's hard to be sure. I plan to have the distributor pick-up changed and
I'm crossing my fingers that is it.

It happened to me in the evening rush hour in the left lane of the Van Wyck.
If you've ever been on the Van Wyck, you know why I don't want to relive the
moment.

Thanks again everybody,
Rob
