Arran, Ah - well thats ok then. The Lucas electrical parts have been the bane of many a British car enthusiast due to, frankly, very poor design. However, if the Lucas oil is a different company then it ought to seriously think about changing its name!! Yes, the 318 is 'stock' in Bristol terms at least. The first Bristol V8s uses the 313 engine and quickly moved on to the 318 for models 408 - 410 - only the 411s had the larger engine from ~1969 or thereabouts. See http://www.boc.net for more information and pictures etc. My 409 is a 'late model' if you can use that description for a car of which only 79 were made. The last ~12 cars had a lighter gearbox, power steering and dual-circuit, dual-servo brakes (both being standard on the 410). The 318s in the 408/409/410 were, apparently, bought as a job lot from Chrysler Canada and the overall engine configuration is not the same as 318s used in US/Canadian vehicles at the time - for instance the hydraulic tappets were replaced with pushrods deliberately (to get more power?) and the head configuration is also apparently a bit different - with the result that the Bristol engines apparently deliver well over 250BHP. The good news is that, thanks to all the North American MOPAR fans, when I was in Connecticut last August I picked up a stock MOPAR drop-in electronic distributor kit for my car that took about 20 minutes to fit and solved a worrying problem with a broken and non-repairable/replaceable vacuum advance unit on the original distributor - car starts and runs much better now! Thanks to Hal at Hamden Chrysler for his generous help in ploughing through old Chrysler manuals to verify that the part would fit:-) Ian On 23 Jul 2004, at 07:41, A.
