Pot Metal re-chrome

That is an average price in the U.K to have the mirrors done. Most chrome shops over here are the industrial finishers, we only have I think 3 or 4 shops that are willing to take on show chrome. I did get to see some bumpers & over riders & the quality of the Finish was superb. The guy who is responsible has been in the Trade for over 30 years.

DAVE!!!!!!!

I can't believe that price, 100 quid that's $265 Aussie for the outside mirrors. And I thought we were getting ripped off here in Oz for stuff. I have been quoted to have mine done at $120 AU = 45 quid or $82 US. What is the problem with your mirrors? You stated that they had no pitting. There are some very good polishers on the market which might bring them up.

I recently called over a Chromer to have a look at what I have and to give me a ball park price for the lot. A lot of my chrome really doesn't need doing however when my Imp is finished I do want it looking great. I am aiming for a great No.2. To have some parts rechromed and others not done may spoil the look of her. There are basically several types of metal on our vehicles with different finishes. There is the Aluminium, Stainless steel, Chromed metal and the Cast Irons. The cost, so I have been told varies considerably as to what the metal is and the condition it is in (pitting, scratches, rust, warping etc). When I was taking off a piece of Stainless roof trim I was in one of my frustrated moods and to cut a long story short I bent the #@#% out of it. Well to have it straightened and a couple of minor dings taken out of it and then polished was going to cost me $100, that's $69 US and  38 quid.

The bumpers are going to cost me $1000 AU each. He said that in 20 years in the business he hasn't seen a bigger bumper on a car. I nearly fainted but after hearing what you are paying in England I feel a little better. They will polish up pretty good but as I said I am aiming for a No. 2. The guy was explaining to me that my grill, although it looks pretty good will cost a bit to get done. The reason being in some parts there are small raised metal protrusions. These can be taken off however the rot also will go down into the metal and the only way to fix it is to fill all the tiny holes which are caused when the protrusions are taken off. This is a very labour intensive job and hence the cost. This is what has to be done for a concourse project however since I am not after that high standard mine will look nearly as good and cheaper.

The bottom line for me was I was told not to expect much change from $10000 AU. For that price he will take out all the pits, dings straighten stuff if it needs it clean polish /chrome etc etc. I will of course be getting several quotes, just polishing much of the interior chrome which is in excellent condition and see how that affects the cost. I will also be doing some of the smaller pieces myself with a kit.

This is all well and good I suppose but it doesn't really address Dave's question re the partial stripping of the mirrors. In short when I was talking with the Chrome guy he never once mentioned that type of process to me.

You may just have to just ask him to explain this process to you more thoroughly and what the benefits are to the normal process.

By the way Dave I have the seat belts off and pics taken but my scanner is busted so can't send you pics. They are in pretty good condition though.

(Working out the old pounds shillings and pence always had me guessing when we had it pre 1966. Imagine Mikey trying to work out what a guinea was? Dave.)

I can not tell you what  it would cost on your side of the pond ! but here in  the U.K the cost for the re-chrome of the fender mirrors is 100 sterling, the exchange rate is approx 1.75 dollars to the pound. ( hey Mikey have you fully worked out yet our old pounds shillings & pence . 240 pennies = 1 pound.) (LOL )have a great day all.

My question on this same subject is what does something like this cost.  On my 59, the metal half circles that split through the rear fin on both sides  back by the tail light are quite pitted.  I would like to have them re-chromed, but what does something like that cost?  Do you suppose that it is compared to a side view mirror size and cost wise?  Any information would be appreciated.  I have not yet checked into any of this for any of my cars.

Thanks.

Today I took the spare set of Fender mirrors to be re-chromed. No great deal in its self but the plating shop wanted to rework them by only taking off the top layer of chrome & leaving the Nickel plate intact on them. Then chrome over the old nickel etc. The mirrors have no pitting , so I cant tell what sort of Finnish will be achieved, has any one had any re-chrome done via this method ? if so  what did it turn out like.
