The ATF/ Moby Dick connection

There is a synthetic whale oil additive substitute called LUBE GUARD comes in a 10 or 12 ounce bottle, I have been adding it to all pre-70's type A required cars and even to late model auto trans's that have erratic acting valve bodies - smoothes most of 'em right out.

The same company also makes additive for using dexron in type3 Chrysler and a few other trans products.

FYI about 1998 Volvo put out a tech bulletin on their transmissions, seems they were having valve spool sticking. Its stated that before doing a tear down or exchange they required their dealers to try the addition of this very LUBE GUARD and at least some miles test driving to see if the problem went away. It did for most.

Like most legends, this one is partly true.  Up until the late 50s,
transmission oil was based on whale blubber (not sperm!).  It was great
stuff, sort of yellow in color, and it lasts forever.  I still have it in
one of my Packards - it has perfect characteristics for the designs used in
those days for clutches and bands.  Dexron/Mercon is an attempt to duplicate
the lubricity, anti-foaming and detergent properties, and it comes pretty
darn close.   The original AQ-ATF type A was indeed whale oil.   The
environmental activists caused the demise of that industry - you can't go
out and harpoon your own whales anymore.
