Torque converter

Aside from vibration issues caused by broken off pump/turbine vanes, a
torque converter fails because the stator oneway clutch fails and you
don't get torque multiplication (the big advantage of an automatic
transmission). To check for this problem you do a "stall test" as
outlined in the FSM. This is a scary test involving a securely set
parking brake, a firm foot on the service brake pedal, and a fearless
foot on the accelerator. Basically, you brake torque the engine until
RPMs won't increase any more. The test must be performed quickly to
avoid overheating the transmission. Read the FSM!
