Paul's advice is good. I know MACCO is a production shop and you can't expect them to give you show quality work. However, in my case the owner, a gentleman up in years, has been a car buff since he was a teen-ager and to this day goes to cruise nights and kicks the tires. I established a good relationship with him so I feel comfortable with him doing the job. However, I was able to lay out specific tasks that I wanted him to perform for me and offered a premium if he would personally supervise the job. He walked me through his shop and explained each step of the process that he would use on my car. He did tell me that he is a production shop and doesn't do much custom work, however, because my car was blocked and primered he took it on. I guess that is a long way around to saying...know specifically what you want and lay it out to the painter...don't use a shop that doesn't treat you as one of the family...be patient...look around for independent painters who have access to a paint booth, they usually will be much less expensive than a regular paint shop. One last item, if you intend to show your car in competition you can expect to pay a premium price. If your like me, just want it to look nice and clean when I take it out for my weekend spin. Good luck! Quint P.S. I take my car to MACCO tomorrow. I expect it will take a week or a bit more to finish. If you're interested I'll let you know what I think of their work. ----- Original Message ----- From: <RandalPark@xxxxxxx> To: <mailing-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2004 11:47 AM Subject: Re: IML: Paint prices ? > It sounds like you may be approaching shops that are primarily focused on crash repairs and not total paint jobs. In our area my feeling about them has been positive, but I don't have unreasonable expectations about their work. Although I have been very pleased with their work, I wouldn't recommend them for a "show job". They simply have too much of an assembly line process to make that possible. Now, if you could befriend one of their employees and have him offer to do your car in their shop in his spare time you would have a good chance of getting something special. > > Keep looking, and try to get some references. Ask other people at cars shows in your area where they have had their work done. Sometimes they will know of a really good shop, or private individuals that do excellent work in their spare time. Often, a good word and visual inspection from another customer is the best way to pick a shop to do a special job on your Imperial. > > Paul > > In a message dated 2/15/2004 2:17:43 PM Eastern Standard Time, imperialman@xxxxxxxxxxxx writes: > > > > > I don't know if it is how I am presenting my self, or what , > > I still get the distinct impression that the bodyshop guys around here just plain don't want to fool with a repaint on my Imperial. The important thing is to know what you want with respect to color and quality of paint, do a walk through of the paint facility and really important, take a good look at some of the jobs your prospective painter has done. > > Good luck! > > > > Quint > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: imperialman > > To: mailing-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx > > Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2004 6:58 AM > > Subject: Re: IML: Paint prices ? > > > > > > For what its worth...A self employed bodyshop owner just quoted me a price of $2800-$3000 to do my 67 Coupe. > > That is with the chrome already removed.
