It is pure hooey. Every 440 I have even owned has run cool under all conditions, including some very severe hot weather (approaching 120 degrees), with a full load of passengers, idling in heavy traffic on the Las Vegas strip, with the ATC doing its usual superb job of keeping everyone comfortable - the gauge NEVER goes above the center of the normal range. Of course, I am careful to pop all the freeze plugs and clean out the block, and have the radiator rodded out each time I buy any car.
