Dick turned out to be correct. I understand why he gets so
much respect here, He deserves it.
I had removed the old fuel pump & was
struggling to install the new one. It just wouldn't line up.I picked the worst
possible day to do this, I was really tired & just getting over a cold.
Today I tried cranking the engine a bit & the push rod
retracted a little more & I had the
new pump in & hooked up in about a half hour. The
car started right up & ran fine until out of fast idle at which time it
stalled & wouldn't restart.
This is when I took Dick B's advice &
removed the mixture
screws & squirted carb cleaner in the holes & a bunch
of rusty crud came out. I then blew them out with compressed air. I reinstalled
the mixture screws to about 1 1/2 turns as the were & the car started right
up although slightly rough idle. I adjusted the screws out to about 2 turns
& the idle smoothed right out. I ran the car for about 1/2 hour & shut
the engine off, then restarted several times & now idles smoother then I
remember it doing in some time.
By the way, the old pump seemed to
have virtually no suction when holding my finger over the inlet. This pump came
from a well used Imperial in 1990 when I bought this 60, so I guess I got my
moneys worth out of it.
I want to thank everyone that offered
their advice. Its great to know we have some talented & helpful members
here.

interchangeability
Again, before trying all that, consider Dick's
suggestion. It may not be the fuel pump for this stall problem, but
simply the carb idle circuit. Try Dick's suggestion first. Its
easier, and cheaper, and more likely to be in the
right direction.
