Note that i've the same problem with my '57 starter !! After a long driving, if i stop the car for a while, the solenoid "clicks" but the starter hesitates a few 0.5 s before cranking. It doesn't happen when: the engine is cold (after 5 or 6 hours) if i start immediatly after 1 or 2 mn. Yes, the ign. timing is right ... I've arrived at the same conclusions as you: too much heat from pipe (but i've stock cast iron manifold). I know that '55 or '56 hemi have heat shield starter. -- Philippe COURANT (Pau, France)- Webmaster des sites ACCF et C-I-F Imperial 1957 Crown convertible Buick 1996 Roadmaster wagon - American Car Club de France (ACCF) : http://www.accf.com - Chrysler Imperial France (C-I-F) : http://www.ifrance.com/c-i-f - Cadillac " Standard of Excellence " : http://www.ifrance.com/accf-cad - SportsCars : http://www.ifrance.com/accf-sprtcar
