Yes, 1956 model cars are as follows: #1- Windsor Start with W followed by 56- or 56L and a four digit number such as 1001 and would be a model C71 V8, #2 Model C72, V* New Yorker- N56-1001 or N56L-1001, #3 Model C73 V8 Imperial C56-1001, #4 Model C70, V8 Crown Imperial C56-1001 & #5 Model C72-300 V8 300series 3N56-1001. All model year and identification numbers are on the Front door hinge post drivers side. the 1001 is the first car manufactured for that year and there is five models of cars made. All numbers are in this format from 55-57 There were three engine styles used in these cars: Spitfire was a 331 cubic inch and used in the Windsor, Firepower was a 354 with a double rocker shaft on heads, hydralic lifters and rated @280 hp & the C72 and 300 were Firepower engines with solid lifters and 340 hp.
