Dick, Thanks for the responce. I put a test light on it today. I grounded the test light and here is what i got. The bulb was bright on the armature and the bulb flickers on the field at both the generator and the voltage regulator. Can the brushes be damaged? I went for a drive down the freeway and the ammeter shows it charging. When I slow down then it stays a litttle on the discharge side and its like it gets stuck. When I kick her in to passing gear it starts to show a charge again until I slow down to a Idle position. Maybe the brushes are not making good contac, could I have melted one or something? The battery was really low. I am charging it now. Its brand new 27 group deep cycle battery. This episode shouldn't have hurt the voltage regulator, unless it was left connected for more than a minute or so with the current flowing. If it was left connected longer than that, the regulator may have been damaged, but the symptom will be that there is no charging going on. So if your tapping on the gauge brings it back to life, you can check for that. If the gauge stays stuck, you can always check for charging by starting the engine, then pulling off on battery cable. If the engine keeps running, the generator is charging, at least a little, so you know the regulator is somewhat functional.
