Rob, Dick, Dan, Dave and all others, I think Dan's description hit the spot the white noise from a speaker is the noise i was thinking of, and as rob has also described the dash does hiss, my reluctance to leave the fuse in was because i had not noticed this noise before and i have been paid to repair the resultant mess from a short circuit in the past which is okay but fixing it on my own time on my own car are not a thought that fills me with joy. When my shift finishes and daylight returns to my spare time i will put the fuse in, sit on my hands and wait for the dash to time out, if the sound goes when the dash dies Neil will be a happy boy. Until then thanks for all your inputs and Dave U for your kind offer.
