Subject: Re: IML: what are stainless roof
inserts
Stainless roof inserts were offered between 1959 and 1963. They
fit in the
space in front of the crown on the roof. The stainless panel
were a catch-up
ploy to compete with the Cadillac. That marque had been
offering a special
model called the Eldorado Brougham which had a
stainless steel roof. For the
folks at Chrysler, giving the Imperial a
stainless steel roof would have been
a tooling nightmare especially since
the recession of 1958 had hurt sales
severely. The folks at Mopar used
good old American ingenuity and crafted a
stainless steel panel over the
sheet metal roof held in place with the
existing hardware for the crown
and windshield trim. Voila! Instant stainless
steel roofs. Bye for
now.
