Paint job

I don't know much about factory paint, but I can assure you, runs, cracks, and orange peel were not part of the factory job.  There are certain areas of factory cars that were more prone to orange peel than others, like the bottom where the rocker panels are.  This is due to the way they painted and how the sprayer was oriented towards the car.  At least this was during the later 60's when I knew they had some degree of automation in painting.  I can't comment on the early 60's.

 

Cracking is either because someone screwed up the bondo beneath the paint, or because someone put too much catalyst for the paint.  I doubt that the factory would do that.  Runs, I haven't heard of any, so I doubt the factory would do that, although I would think it to be more probable if the car was automatically painted instead of painted by a guy who probably paints 20-30 cars a day in a factory.

 

The most distressing part of your post is "I didn't know you wanted a good paint job."  I mean, for Pete's sake, you have to tell someone to do a good job?  There's no justification in being sloppy and lazy, especially if you want to stay in business.  I'd take him to small claims court (and I seriously hope you didn't give more than five grand to that moron) on general principle and go find me someone who WILL do a good job AND stand behind their work.  DEFINITELY don't give that fool more money.   Seriously, the guy needs more than a lawsuit, he needs someone who has a middle name of 'The" to physically show him how to be more consumer-oriented.

 

If he base/cleared the car, you'll probably have to paint the whole affected panels over again, maybe even the entire car if they can't match the paint.  Given the guy's attitude, I wouldn't be surprised if he used garbage paint.  If he used single-stage, you probably could blend the repaired areas in with the rest of the car.  If he used some metallic/pearl compound in the paint, you need to shoot the panel again as only a real top-notch painter can make blend that in.

 Hey All,

 

  I have been having quite a bit of trouble with the guy painting my 62. After having it for seven months the paint had runs, orange peel and a crack in it. I complained about it and he said ( This is a quote) "I didn't know you wanted a good paint job." He went on to explain to me that in 62 cars typically had runs and orange peel in the paint. I thought that Imperials most certainly would not. He also asked for more money.

 

   My question to all you good folks is did the original paint have serious flaws in them? And why would I want them on my car?
