I have an 81 IMP and other than the non-factory carb conversion the biggest problem I have had was electrical. The headlight switch and wiring to the lights was burnt badly and the turn signal switch shorted out. I have heard that the headlights are a common problem with 81 to 83 years. The gas gauge sending unit and tank were rusted beyond repair due to moisture that built up in the tank from sitting for 9 years as well. The fuel pump still works but I took it out since it's caburated. I spent $400 repairing the headlights and since I couldn't find a replacement fuel gauge sending unit I replaced the entire dash, gauges and tank with parts from a Dodge Mirada and a Cordoba, this is still in work! I know Chrysler addressed rusting trunk lids midway through 1981 production, but it seems the mechanicals, electrical and bodywork were virtually unchanged from one production year to next. Radios and colors seem primary differences. > > Since 1981 accounts for 70% of Imperial coupes made, it is hard to determine just from postings whether Chrysler learned from experience and made hidden improvements. So, for those of you with a 1981 and 1982-83, any feelings that the first year is more trouble-prone? Anything else I should be concerned about in making this change? > > Dave Morrison > 1982 FS > --
