New 727 transmission?

Does anyone know if 727 transmissions are still being made?  A man I'm
talking to said he had a "new" one put in his Imperial.  Not a rebuild,
a new one.

I've never heard of a 727 going so bad that it needed total replacement,
especially not on a relatively low mileage car?  Am I wrong about its
reliability?  What would cause it to need total replacement?  Running it
without fluid??
