RE: IML: sure grip whine

If the gear set was set up wrong to start with and enough gear ware is present, no set-up will work correctly, unless possibly you dove it enough to re- ware the gears to the proper contact pattern. Then a re-set up would be required to take up the gear back lash. It's not rock science, and we run 800HP through 3-1/2" gears, we know what set-up means. Dave.

If you?re asking me, Chris, I?d say get it to a shop and have them set the pinion engagement per the detailed instructions in the shop manual, using a new crushable sleeve, and check that pinion bearing. There may be nothing else wrong, just an incorrect adjustment.

I got two high recommendations from from car people in the area. This shop is a rear end shop exclusively.  Here's their link: http://www.rearendshop.com/index.html  The owner sounds like he knows what he's talking about but now I'm a little suspicious.

Sounds like I should replace the ring and pinion too since this has been an ongoing problem?

This is the first mention I?ve heard that the whine is on power only.  That is often the sign of a bad pinion bearing or incorrectly set pinion to ring gear tooth engagement.  The shop that rebuilt your diff should have checked that thoroughly, and reset the pinion engagement to specifications. If they missed this, or aren?t aware of the need for it, find a better shop!  Consult your shop manual for specific instructions on this, or if you don?t have one, copy the appropriate pages from the one on the IML site.

The whine is power on only.  It's always whined while I've had it.  The only thing left to whine is the R @ P.  But I guess it's a shot in the dark with a used one because the shop might think it looks good but it might whine anyway.

Can someone tell me if the shop should have known by looking at the R @ P that it would whine? My original complaint was the whine.

Thx,

Chris

I don't think you ever stated, if the noise or whine is with power on, power off, or coast. If it made the same sound before service, it was probably repaired before and not set - up right. In that case the ring and pinion would wear incorrectly, and make noise. If the service done now, simply re-shimed to the old set-up, or possibly correct, the noise will continue. Any adverse whine or noise is tell-tale premature ware. If a used ring&pinion are installed, very careful set-up should be done, or the same problem will exist, since the gears already have a ware pattern set. The standard 2.76-2.94-3.23 should be whisper quiet. Dave.
