The push buttons activate cables connected to the transmission. 
Inoperative push buttons do not necessarily mean that the entire 
transmission should be replaced. I don't have a '59, but the push 
button cars that I have ('56, '60, '62, '63) are set up so that the 
bezel surrounding them can easily be removed, and the buttons reset 
into their proper levers without much fuss. Its like a snap or friction 
type fit. Specifically, there is a "ball" on the end of the arm 
connected to the button. The ball "pops" into a slot on the lever that 
is mounted in the dash and in turn connected to a cable. The arms are 
shaped so that they can only go together one way, and sit in there 
respective positions while installing the bezel. If the bezel won't 
fit, or the buttons look crooked, then they are not correct. They 
seldom come apart, but pushing two of them at the same time will make 
several of them "pop" out of their slots. If any of the arms are 
broken, check the parts suppliers listed on the OIC web site.

I think that you should explore the OIC web site for some pictures and 
other information. The site is huge and richly detailed especially 
regarding these years and features of Imperials.

On the topic of push button transmissions, I have a 59 Crown 4 door S 
in which I am rebuilding the engine. I have not been able to drive it 
yet. The trans push buttons on the dash do not look right. I think 
reverse is sticking out and all the others are depressed. Or maybe it 
is two buttons are sticking out. Is there any way to test the push 
button control without running the engine. I assume it is a mechanical 
linkage. Is this something that can be repaired or should I start 
looking for a replacement or the entire push button transmission.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank the many well informed people 
that contribute to this site, it is one of the best classic car forums 
on the internet, the 356 Porsche site being the other.

64s have a different instrument cluster, dash panels and decor are 
different. So is the radio. The cables to operate the trans would have 
to be different.It would be easier to buy a 64. Geoff Simpson

why make it a push button you should look at  a tilting and 
teliscoping  steering wheel if it dosent have one and I think that the 
transmission is the same the 65 has the shift cable just like the 64 so
