Title: Re: IML: 1978 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham coupe DECODED
Chris,
Thank you so much! I've been decoding some of it myself,
but not in such detail.
The data tag tells how it is. It's a pretty basic New
Yorker Brougham coupe with the full vinyl roof and moving rear quarter windows.
It's got a power sunroof, Auto climate control, cruise control, velour seating,
400ci engine, fender skirts -- and am/fm with factory 8-track :) A Glen Miller
8-track comes with the car!
The car was sold new in Alberta. It's a pale
yellow with a light tan or taupe vinyl roof, and the same sort of taupe
interior.. It's got 106,000 kilometres. What's best is that absolutely
everything works :) There is zero rust on the floors, engine bay, or trunk,
though there is some corrosion on the bottom of both rear quarter panels. The
400 runs so smoothly that a nickel would sit upright on the running
engine.
I bought it today, but it's going to stay at a friend's place for
two months while I do some finishing-up on my '81 Cordoba which will be my daily
driver. I'm VERY excited about finding the New Yorker! Especially in such good
condition.
I hope everyone had as great a Christmas as I have
:)

David,
Took me a while to get to this with the
holidays, but here goes... Answers are embedded within your email,
below...

C = Chrysler make
S = Special price line (the resulting CS indicated
a New Yorker Brougham)
23 = 2-door hardtop (note that St Regis equipped cars
were still designated as hardtops since they have no structural B-pillar under
that vinyl top)
N = 400 V8 1x4-bbl carb
8 = 1978 model year
V = This is
a typo in your email, I think. Should be C for Jefferson Avenue plant (Detroit),
and it's correct in your data plate info below.
180048 = sequence number,
meaning 80,048th car from Jefferson for MY1978 (they started at 100,001 every
model year)
> Build date: 5-78 -- Canadian build, I think.
No,
all NYBs came from Jefferson Avenue.
Note: The plant is gone but on its
former site (well, adjacent to it, to be accurate) is the new Jefferson North
plant where Jeep Grand Cherokees (and Commanders, until they put that thing out
its misery in 2008) roll off the line. The new facility isn't really that new,
as it opened in 1991.
> MDH: 052613 (I don't know what this is, but it
was on the door tag)
Month Day Hour it ended production: May 26th, either
1pm or 13th working hour of the day
> Data tag:
Note: Anything
I mark with * means it was standard on all NYBs. Data plates are notorious for
calling out obvious standard equipment. Your build sheet, if you can find it
(try under the rear seat cushion) will tell you much more.
> 37(but
much larger than the rest of the type) M51 N92
Not sure about the big
37... Will look into it.
M51 = Power steel sunroof
N92 = Electronic Spark
Control without catalyst (unique to Canada-market cars)
> P31 N88 G63
M25
P31 = Power windows*
N88 = Automatic speed control (cruise
control)
G63 = Right-hand outside mirror, remote, chrome
M25 = Body sill
moldings*
> V1Y H53 L81 L31
V1Y = Vinyl roof, Gold (not
metallic gold, but more like tan or saddle)
H53 = A/C with Auto Temp
II
L81 = Door Ajar warning lamp*
L31 = Fender-top-mounted turn signal
indicators*
> PY1 PZY3 619 D10069
PY1 = Jasmine Yellow
paint (I think this combo matches the car shown in the 1978 brochure:
(http://nybclub.org/factoryliterature/1978/Brochure/ChryslerNewYorkerNewport/imagepages/image3.html)
PZY3
= Interior code: P=Premium* | Z=(cloth reclining 50/50 seat)* | Y3=Gold
619 =
Scheduled production date of June 19 (are you sure this isn't 519? It's pretty
far off from the other two build times we've decoded so far, and should be
earlier than the MDH above)
D10069 = Vehicle order number
> L64 D34
CS23 N 8C 180048
L64 = Should be E64 (check again) for 400 V8 with single
4-bbl carb, 210-hp (I'm guessing Canadian cars without catalyst had 20 more hp
than US version)
D34 = Standard-duty automatic transmission
CS23 N 8C
180048 = the VIN, decoded already (above)

decipher this for me?
Well, maybe not wise but happy to help!
