I had a similar experience about 3 or 4 years ago. The converter got
red hot and the engine did not want to run. I believed it was an extremely
rich mixture that was caused by computer. It was very unreliable and I did
not dare to drive it for fear I would not get home.
I never did diagnose the problem. However, I was able to purchase a
used hydraulic support plate and a used computer at that time. In
installed both, although I always believed it was the computer, and the car has
not given me a problem since. It always starts, (the starter cranks a
little longer when it is hot in the summer) and it runs very well. Here in
Illinois it sets out in the driveway in the winter and has never failed to start
and run smoothly, even when it is 10 below zero. I have just over 100,000
miles on it. I never did change the converter.
These cars have their quirks and intermittent problems are extremely
difficult to track down but when they run they are a joy to drive. I still
knock on wood but have had no engine problems for the past three years and
I drive it almost every day. If you can locate a known good computer (I
have heard of people repairing them but this is way beyond my electronic skill)
(I am electron challenged) I would install it and I believe your problem will be
solved. .
If not, I am thinking of selling my 81. It shows the 26 years in
Illinois and 100,000 miles but has proven to be a fun and reliable knock around
car for several years. It has a moon roof and snowflake wheels. .
