Re: IML: Installing Replacement Tail Light Lenses on a '62

I bought a pair of reproductions for my '62 about 20 years ago. They had the holes drilled already, and the original screws worked fine. I had to remove the "reflectors" inside the old lenses and install them into the new ones. Other than that, the job was a piece of cake. I finally put them on the car in 2003.

If there are no mounting holes drilled by the lens manufacturer then you'll have to drill and tap them yourself.  If you know how to do that then go for it.  Perhaps check with one of the Imperial salvage yards on the screw size of an original, especially if you're going for show quality "exact as manufactured".

The original screws were course thread, not machine screws.  They should be in the neighborhood of #8, maybe #10?

I don't have a '62 at present or I would take one apart and measure it.  But I do recall from the '62 I used to have that the screws bit into the plastic and worked fine.  I never had a problem with them backing out.  The light bulb will go out long before vibration kicks the screw out, so you'll be in there again replacing the bulb and retigtening things.

If you don't have to tools for a DIY, a local machine shop would be able to drill and tap to the screw size you want.
