While reading these opinions, something just hit me like cold water
in the face.I recall restoring a 1963 1/2 Ford Galaxie years ago, and when my paint and body guy was finishing the car, he asked me if he could use all the modern,
contempory adhesives and techniques they use on new cars to put the trim back on. I agreed to it, and you know, you couldn't tell the difference. And, he said if I ever needed to remove some of the trim later, it's a lot
easier to peel off than detach the old style clips. Any thoughts on this? Steve Texas 61 Crown Coupe -----Original Message----- From: mailing-list-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx[mailto:mailing-list-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of randalpark@xxxxxxx

Taping the chrome will not get you as good of a paint job. It just can not be done as well. That said, if you only want a driver that looks great going down the road, or standing still from 15 feet away, then go for it. Removing the chrome is one "H" of a lot of work, and you are right, the clips will be a big problem, although they can be had/made/replaced. I have used both methods and was much happier with the result of doing the extra work to remove all the chrome. The other thing that happens is that the shop can slip and scuff the chrome while they are sanding the car. These scuffs show up pretty well after the car has a nice shiny coat of paint on it. So does dull or pitted chrome, for that matter. Rechroming is expensive, but again, it all depends on your plan for the car. In planning and preparation for a future paint job, I have a question that has a great bearing on removing ALL the trim. Are ALL of the clips available that will be needed to replace the trim on my car, if in fact ALL of the trim is removed for painting? I have had painters tell me you can really get yourself in a mess if the clips can't be had. I realize taping off is not the ideal method, but if replacing this huge amount of trim is going to be a major problem, I certainly might consider it. Any help here will be appreciated.
