This is correct, and if '66 is the same unit (I think it is) than the
missing component is the controller mounted under the dash. The early
controller has a radio tube inside. By '66 they may have still been
using that, or they may have replaced it with a similar transistorized
component. There are no wires that go directly to the headlights. As
Jim explains, it is wired through the dimmer switch on the floor. Also,
I believe that the units usually were installed by the factory,
although I have run across dealer installations. You can sometimes tell
the difference by the position of the photocell mounting on the dash.
Incidentally, there is a special tool used to aim the photocell. It
consists of a bracket that fits the housing with a bubble balance
attached. A neat little unit!

Hi David -
I don't know if this will be of any help but my '62 Crown has the
headlight dimmer option but appears to be dealer installed. It
consists of the Scanner which sits atop the dash in a different
location than the factory unit, the Scanner Control Box, which is
located near the EL Transformer under the dash up on the left kick
panel, and a special Headlight Dimmer Switch.
The Scanner has a cable made up of three wires: light green, violet &
black. This bound cable ends in a three part male plug that joins an
oversize female plug the cable from which goes into the Scanner Control
Box.
The Scanner Control Box has another bound cable which splits into a
group of three wires (light blue, light green & tan) which end in a
three way male plug into which is plugged the three prong female plug
which would normally go to the standard dimmer switch. The other part
of the cable from the Control Box ends in two female plugs: A single
connector plug from a red wire and a three connector plug into which go
the remaining black, grey and violet wires. These plug into the
speacialized dimmer switch
It appears that this system gets its power from the headlight switch
from one of the wires which would normally go to the dimmer switch from
the standard three connector female plug.
The dimmer switch that is used is different from the standard switch in
that in addition to the three male prongs on the bottom there is a
single male prong on the top of the switch.
The system appears to be entirely self contained and simply splices
into the standard setup through a speacialized dimmer switch and a
"jumper" set up which plugs into the standard dimmer switch feed.
This reads more complicated than I intended so let me know if a diagram
would help and I will work one out and send it to you. Also this may
not be the system used on the '66, but I imagine that it's close
Good Luck

I have learned from another mailing list that the three wires from the
dimmer controller are distributed thusly -- two to the headlights and
one to the headlight switch. That helps me some, but not enough.
Is there a wiring diagram including this system in any year FSM? Does
somebody by chance know which pin on the headlight switch and which pin
on the bulkhead connector these wires go to? I really don't want to
have to take my dash apart to figure this out.
Happy motoring,
David
