Hi all -
I found the magazine and it's HCC #1 not Collectible
Automobile. The article doesn't quite say what I remember reading so maybe
I mis-read somthing somewhere else or maybe I dreamed the whole thing. It
does have a great picture showing the Benrus watch in the wheel.
I remember a thread here not long ago about access holes
in the trunks of '58 and some '59 Imperials and other MoPars of those
years. I don't recall if that was ever fully answered for after checking
the trunk of my '60 I kinda zoned out on the thread. The article about
this DeSoto states that "Unlike today's cars, in which mechanics have to
remove the gas tank to gain access to the fuel pump, Chrysler installed a black
metal cover over a cutout in the trunk floor of the 1958 models to make access
to the coffee maker-sixe (electric) fuel pump easier" should they be fitted with
the optional Bendix Electronic Fuel Injection. This was optional on the
Imperial as well although non are mentioned as being so equipted. It was a
system ahead of its time as it's main failing was that it used the same "waxed
paper" covered components that we with Electroluminescent lighting on our
Imperials know and love!
Enjoy your cars -

The clock rotates
when the wheel is turned, that is how it is wound.
The steering wheel clock
is a rare accessory, and was a high grade
jeweled movement self winding
Benrus.

Hi Jack -
There was a feature in
Collectible Automobile about a factory fuel
injected DeSoto convertible - I
think the only one left out of 3, that
had the clock in the steering wheel.
If I remember correctly, it had
some kind of mounting that kept the clock
face from rotating when the
wheel was turned - something like the steering
wheel hub mounted
transmission buttons on the '58 Edsel. The article
mentioned it at
some length and the owner bought a complete restored 2dr
hdtp just to
get the clock! If I can remember the date of the magazine or
find mine
I'll send the info to you.

Imperialists:
I
acquired a Benrus' a while back and FOR THE LIFE OF ME, I cannot
figure out
how to mount it in the wheel center as the normal center
'power steering'
piece does a quarter turn in and out of the holding
mechanism and there is
nothing like that with the piece I own.....maybe
there is a mounting kit
necessary.....
