Hi Pete,I understand your point of view, but as far as I know the engine was recently rebuild. And it runs very smooth and power full, so I simply hate the idea of pulling the head of a sound engine.
Maybe I should try the hours long session of leaning over the fender first :)
If all fails I can always remove the head, but I do hope it aint necessary. Thanks, Rob----- Original Message ----- From: "Pete Engel" <peter.engel@xxxxxxxxxxx>

The back stud on my 70 LeBaron was broken years ago. About 1/4" of it stuck out of the head. Since I was about to install a new y-pipe I really wantedto get rid of the phht phht phht noise that had been irritation me for years. I went all out to remove the broken stud. It is truly horrible to access that back stud. I went so far as to remove the steering column. After hours of leaning over that huge fender andsoaking, heating, tapping, drilling, soaking, heating, tapping, drilling Icalled that car everything but a 1970 Imperial LeBaron.I bit the bullet and pulled the cylinder head. When I saw the condition ofthe original stamped steel head gasket I pulled the other head too. I had them both reconditioned and put the whole thing back together. The engine ran smoother than ever before. Unless your engine has been apart recently I'd just pull the heads and get it over with. I suspect that you'll be happy that you did. I need some expert advise with regard to the exhaust manifold studs of my1960 Imperial. For 10 days ago I broke the exhaust manifold flange of theleft manifold... <snip> The number two stud (counting from the radiator) and the last stud are broken and almost flush with the head. Ofcourse I can try if the 4 remaining studs and bolts will secure the manifold but I simply don't like the idea. On the otherhand, I either don't like the idea of taking the head off. And at least the last stud is very difficult (or not..) accessible with the head in place. So maybe I should aim for the second stud to come out. Both studs are almost flushed with the head surface (slightly below actually). ----------------- http://www.imperialclub.com ----------------- This message was sent to you by the Imperial Mailing List.
