Hi Pete Engel,I was wondering if you know what type or partnumber rear axle wheel bearings I need ( or company to order) for my 1970 Chrysler Imperial Le Baron. Sorry but it is not the 2 door hdtp which I described for the mailing list. Unfortuantly it's a 4-door hdtp with a 440 cu/in. And do you know how to remove the bearings from the axle incl. retainer rings etc?
I hope you can help me! Thanks a lot. Best regards, Edwin de Bruijn.--- Original Message ----- From: "Pete Engel" <peter.engel@xxxxxxxxxxx>

I've owned my 70 LeBaron 4DHT for over 20 years and I've never seen a 70 2DHT. 69s show up from time to time and I've even see a few 71s; 2 of the 71s had sunroofs! But 70s just seem to have disappeared. Maybe they all went overseas because I have seen pictures of a triple black 70 coupe located in northern Germany and also some of a bahama blue 70 coupe owned by an IML member from New Zealand. Fred got the description of rear axle disassembly right. The only thing that I will say is that I wouldn't be surprised if the noise you're hearing is simply axle bearings. When I got my 70 so many years ago I immediately noticed an unpleasant noise coming from the rear end. The car had only 80k miles or so at the time. When I pulled the axles I found that both had very bad tapered roller bearings. OTOH if the differential oil in your car leaked out and it was driven like that there could well be "center chunk" problems. At the time I bought my car I was fortunate to have access to a low miles 71 Imperial so I simply installed the axles from that car in mine. A bonus was that I got RH threads on all the lug nuts (I also used the front rotors from that same 71). Tell us more about your rare car. I'd love to see a pic of the fender tag from it. Here's a shot of my 70: http://bos-engel.com/imperial/sideview.jpg My car is an early production unit, being scheduled for assembly in mid-August 1969.
