One reason is that if the reserve is known bidding will likely stall in the 
area of the reserve.  For instance, if the reserve is $10,000.00 bidders 
will most likely not bid much higher than that amount.  Also, bidding may 
stall at an amount close to but below the reserve with the thought the 
seller will drop the reserve.

Just my thoughts.
