Re: IML: High output Starter For 60imp 383

The 1958 350-cid V8 engine was a B block engine, not RB. Stroke on the 350
was 3.375", same as the B block 361 and B block 383. 1958 was the first
year for the B block (350 and 361) with the B block 383 appearing for 1959.

The RB engine was introduced for 1959, replacing the 354/392 block, and was
available only in Chryslers and Imperials. The RB block 383 was used only
in American-built 1959-60 Chrysler Windsors and Saratogas while the 413 was
used in the Chrysler New Yorker, 300-E/F and all Imperials. Stroke on the
RB was 3.75". And contrary to what some "experts" claim, DeSoto NEVER
offered an engine based on the RB block. It was strictly a
Chrysler/Imperial engine in 1959-60.

Due to the small bore on the RB 383 (4.03") that engine used the heads from
the 361 engine while the B 383 (4.25" bore) shared heads with the 413.
Which adds to the confusion.

Don't forget, there was also a 350 RB 57-58 motor too, I believe the B
motor started in 59.361-383, kinda fuzzy,as many of my references are gone
thanks to Hurricane Jean. Dave

The 413 is an RB engine while most 383 were B engines. Very early on there
was a RB 383.
Other than the greater deck height (height from the crank to the head) the
RB engines are also wider where the intake manifold sits and so need a wider
intake manifold.
Measuring the width of the intake is probably the easiest way to determine
if you have the B or RB engine. I do not know what the exact measurements
are, but could find out.
