Also, starters for 1962 and up V8 engines will not fit pre-1962 engines. Before 1962 Chrysler used Autolite direct-drive starters. Starting in 1962, Chrysler-built reduction gear starters were used. The problem lies in the ring gear - the number of teeth on the gear was changed along with the starter. 1962-64 Dodge 880 and Chryslers with manual transmissions continued to use direct-drive stafters as did Canadian-built 1962-66 slant six models (Prestolite starter).
