I think you can jump two terminals of the relay to achieve this. I
don't remember which ones, but a quick check of the wiring diagram
should confirm. Of course if the connection between the relay and the
starter is bnad, nothing will happen even if the starter is good. I
replaced my starter before I found the problem. Now I have an extra
starter. It wasn't even dirty, nor was the relay, so I assume a
previous owner had run into the same trouble I had, but never found the
real problem. That turned out to be the small wire between the relay
and the starter.

The last time I tried to start it the cranking slowed gradually until
it wouldn't turn over at all. I assumed the battery went dead and let
it sit for a few months. But now I'm told by NAPA that that is how a
bad starter will also act. I was told a simple way to troubleshoot it
is to cross a screwdriver in the large and small nuts on the starter
where the positive lead come in. If it cranks it rules out a bad
starter.
I'd like confirmation this is safe and will not harm the electrical
system.
