Re: IML: 1961 oil preasure should I be concerned

Hi Mark,

If your 61 was originaly sold in the California market, it has a PCV valve.  It should be pluged into the passenger side valve cover toward the rear of the engine.  If it is there, disconnect it and shake it.  If you hear it rattle, chances are it's OK.  If it doesn't rattle, it's "toast" and needs to be replaced.  The hose it plugs into should also be checked against blockage.  If you have a California car and either or both of those items are blocked, you'll get oil out the breather cap.  My '60, though originally a California car, at some point had the PCV system replaced with an old fashioned breather pipe that was used for the rest of the states.  Not very "earth friendly",  but that crankcase sure breathes well.

Good Luck -

Subject: IML: 1961 oil preasure should I be concerned

My 1961 oil preasure gage has always on the low end. It has never even read dead center. I have had the car for 15 years and rarely drive it , and it runs good. But now it needs to be my main and only car to get around. Im curiose if  the preasure is low why then does oil blow out threw the breither  cap . Wouldnt that appear to prove that there is plenty of preasure? What is the normal amount of preasure on the oil for this 413 wedge moter? Als the car does not ever over heat wouldnt low oil preasure tend to heat the moter up ?
