You may all find this crazy, but I leave the seat in, prop my legs up
ward on the seat back, and use gravity to force my head up under where
it needs to be. At this age, I can use all the help I can get. Getting
out of that position is another matter all together! It also helps to
vacuum the carpet first!
Speedometer, Cluster, Electro luminescent, and Accessory Switch work I
do mostly from above, but radios and heaters I work on from below. I
recently sent all of my spare radios to be rebuilt, so when they come
back I will be working on each of them, along with anything else in the
vicinity needing attention, such as defroster ducts, front speaker,
heater control cables, wiper linkage, etc. These are on bench seat 1960
through 1965 Imperials all of which radios are working, but not well.
Several heater control cables have slipped their adjustment, and the
defroster ducting in the non-a/c '63 won't stay fastened to the vents.
This is frustrating when you need to use the defroster to clear the
foggy windshield.
I haven't dug into the '68 yet, but I strongly suspect it is a totally
different ball game.
One thing for certain, I will never run out of projects.

You're right that removing the seat from the track is not difficult.
The problem is when you're trying to work under the dash you have to
lie on the track or find a mattress-like cover for it. That's why I
prefer removing the whole assembly. If the seat's too heavy by itself,
you can of course make it a two-step process.
Happy motoring,
