Re: IML: rear end noise

i agree with dave but feel the pinion is either loose or too tight(burning up the bearing) not a good thing.being used to 9inch ford rears and 12 bolt chevy posi units my advice is be cautious and try to find someone who knows what they are doing.
good luck and best wishes

By the conditions you have described, it would seem the gear set-up was wrong. The special gear lube, has to do with the clutch unit in the posi unit, this usually only makes noise, during turns. Its also possible the pinion gear shimming(741-742 housing) was done wrong, if it's a 489 case, the crush sleeve may have been reused, and bearing pre-load is wrong. Its also possible the pinion nut is loose. If thats the case, (741-742 housings) check the torque on the nut. If its a 489 case, the pinion nut torque, and bearing pre-load can only be done with the carrier assembly removed from the axle assembly. There is a casting number on the side of the carrier housing that will identify the housing.Ya'll have a nice day, Dave.
