I guess I have a question, Meg. Do you have a regular mechanic?
I've found that with old(er) vehicles, it's better to find someone who
specializes in older cars, not only Imperials, but older cars in general.
First, they usually know where to get parts (new or NOS), and if they can't find
one, they might cut you a break and find a really good used part from a wrecked
or parts car. If you have a situation they can't repair, they also usually
know someone who can help you and they also usually know bodywork people,
etc. From my experience, the pricing isn't bad, either.
For myself, I won't even take my car to Jiffy Lube to get the oil
changed. I've got a mechanic who's the only one who's worked on my car for
the past 7 years. If he can't fix it, he finds someone who can. If I
need body work, he's got someone for that. Even if I need a tow, he's got
a guy that gives breaks and is really gentle with the car.
I finish up with this Midas mess and get the car repaired to your
satisfaction or get my money back, but I'd also look around for a good mechanic
that would be happy to service your Imperial.
