I think that the Fuel Gauge on '56 was jumpy when new. Mine was that way when I got it, and the original owner claimed it was always that way. At least it works.

    We in the '56 [at least] models have an access hole, rubber-insert-like protected, under the carpet in the trunk which allows access to change the sender's without dropping the tank, as it is located DIRECTLY above the unit.  Lucky us.
