Another factor being overlooked here is the amount of energy in a moving vehicle. The size of a vehicle becomes less of an issue when it travels faster. (look at the amount of damage a one ounce bullet can do) In the situation of Greg's friend with the Buick, chances are he had mere moments to see the oncoming car and start braking. If he had been traveling 55 MPH (it was a two lane road) and managed to bring his speed down 10 MPH to 45 it put him at a greater disadvantage. The Intrepid was traveling at twice the speed of the Buick. The Intrepid (although smaller) has the ability to inflict the most damage. Had the Buick driver been in a new Chrysler 300C the car would have suffered much more damage but he quite possibly could have walked away from it. A buddy of mine (from another old car list) found himself in a winless situation one day. His heavy Buick Wildcat saved his life. http://www.angelfire.com/ca/mineryhomepage/67accident.html I do believe Mark McDonald when he said, for the most part, (some) new cars are better at saving your life than old(er) cars. Technology has come a long way in protecting the occupants from rear end, side and head-on crashes. The electronics in cars of today monitor so much, it's amazing! Of course, the car is usually toast but at least that can be replaced...
