In this case, it would depend on when the bulk of these miles were put
on this car. Unleaded gas will cause valve recession in the 440 if
regularly driven at high speed at around 100,000 miles. If it has
already had a valve job sometime in the past, as long ago as the late
1970's, it may already have hardened valves and seats. Then the
unleaded fuel wouldn't hurt it. If it were mine and the car runs fine,
I wouldn't do anything until I was going to do the whole enchalada. If
it runs bad after a tune up and/or has uneven compression, the heads
would be a good place to start. Poor compression which increases with
oil in the cylinders means bad rings, not usually means head problems,
possibly valves or head gasket. Valve damage can also result from a
vacuum leak or lean fuel mixture, but hardened valves and seats seem
more durable for this problems as well.

Subject: Re: IML:Valve job
Is there a rule of thumb for when to have a valve job done and what
should I expect to pay? The 440 has 100,000 miles and I really don't
want to do a complete rebuild yet.
