If the engine turns out to be a 331, it will not bolt up to the 354-392 trans, unless it had a 331 to start with. I've seen engine parts books that show a331 till 56. I suspect if the torque coverter sticks out 4-6 inches, from the front of the trans, it's a 331, if not then 354-392 would work. Kinda fuzzy on old hemis, but I think this is a good base line.
