Some basics, off the top of my head:

• A fire extinguisher of the automotive type, kept where you can get to it easily (buried in a bin in the trunk is not the place).
• Wheel chocks (they make little folding ones that work well). If you have to jack up a rear wheel, the opposite rear often rises, too, and the front wheels won’t keep the car from rolling.
• A basic first-aid kit.
• A valid auto club membership card or equivalent (Hagerty Insurance offers a roadside assistance plan for policyholders for a bargain price).
• Basic tools that fit your car (a few wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.).
• Spare fuses and a spare ballast resistor.
• Good quality jumper cables.
• An inflated spare tire no older than the other tires. Check it regularly and keep it overinflated. You can then deflate it to normal pressure if you have to install it.
• A folding emergency triangle (reflector), especially if your car does not have hazard flashers (but even if it does).
• Cheap painter’s coveralls and an empty lawn-size trash bag in case you need to change and stow a messy tire.
• A good flashlight with fresh batteries.
• A container of hand-wipes.
• Mechanic’s gloves (Sears has these on sale for $9.99 all the time).
• A rubber mallet to reinstall wheel covers (or just leave them off till you get home...you’ll probably make that the spare again anyway).
  

If you’re taking a longer trip away from unfamiliar areas, there are other things to pack, but for everyday driving, these are some basic things. They won’t take up much space or add much weight.
