There is a bit of difference between disc brake action (99intrepid) and drum brake action (58 Imp). A trick I learned a while back from an old timer was to score the brake linings with a razor knife in a diagonal pattern like a barber pole. The scores are about 1" to 2" apart, and about 1/8" deep. It takes several passes of the blade to do this mind you. What these do is change the resonant frequency of the system by making the linings vibrate in sections rather than as a whole. If you really want to have fun, you can use a Dremel tool and make slightly deeper scores with a cutting wheel. Either way, the braking performance is not altered, and the noise will be stopped.

I replaced the front brakes for the first time on my 99 Intrepid last year. I went with the best pads that NAPA had below the ceramic ones and replaced the rotors. Horrible squeal right after assembly. The squeal did not go away with driving. I disassembled the brakes and applied an anti squeal goo liberally on the back of the pads. The squeal went away, but returns when the brakes are hot. I figure that it has to do with the pad friction characteristics and a resonant frequency of the pads or some other part of the brakes. I don't like the sound, but know the brakes are good. Can you try an anti squeal compound or different shoes. How about some of the liquid electrical tape stuff on parts of springs where you can use it to deaden resonance? I do not think the silicone fluid has any thing to go with it. Good luck.

I have just rebuilt the brakes on my 58 including all stainless steel sleeving, new linings and now using Silicon fluid. My problem is that after about 20 min of driving and when the brakes are hot I get this terrible squealing when applying the brakes. I have had the drums of twice and cannot see any problems. Anybody have any soloutions.
