the + side of the coil doesn't get 12 volts, not really a good place for the
electric choke.

If the electric choke has a + and -, then - goes to ground, and the plus
can go to anything that has power when the ignition is turned on. I have
run it to the + side of the coil on my non-Imperials with success.
For my Imperials I have preferred to keep the original carb set up and
choke process. When it comes to replacement/rebuilding, I do what is
necessary to meet that goal.
