Michael: Thank you for thoughtful answer; your level of knowledge does not seem to be anything to be apologizing for!
I want to clarify one thing: there is a bent pushrod not a bent valve. I had an old buick that stripped the plastic teeth off its timing gear. Over a short time, it went symptomatically at least down the same road with one exception: it began shooting compressed charge backwards up through the carburettor! This car is not doing any such thing.
Question for the list: Does the fact it is NOT vomiting fuel charge eliminate skipped valve timing as cause? Meantime, I shall certainly try to verify timing. Thank you.

Tom,
I don't have enough real
knowledge to have been able to offer help, but have
been in the same situation several times, and figure any comment might at
least cause you to think of something else to check.
First, I've abused many cars, and one thing I have done all my adult life is
let one sit, sometimes over a year. I have three running cars now that have
fuel that's two years old or older. One has not been started in two years.
Any one of them would start, maybe with a little help, and run. Point is, I
know it's not a good thing to do, but I have NEVER had a failure due to old
fuel. I don't remember how old you feel the fuel is, so I am not saying it
can't happen.
Second, I had a 318 Satellite that had enough play in the timing chain to
jump a tooth. It ran, but badly, then not at all. Took a while to stumble
across the problem. If you haven't checked the timing, and can, do.
Bending valves doesn't sound like bad fuel, but like a failed timing
set.
Good luck with the car. Don't give up.
Michael
