This is true, but valve lubrication needs to come through the fuel system. That means adding "top and valve oil" to the gas. Most high mileage cars have enough wear in the rings and valve guides to allow this to pretty much happen on its own. I have heard of folks adding a pint of 30w to the gas for the valves and I suppose it helps. I did it myself after getting an old 331 Hemi running after it had been parked for 30+ years. Even that causes a little smoke. I haven't heard that there was any benefit in adding a quart of ATF to the gas, and as has been stated, I expect that would create a lot of smoke out the tail pipe. I don't think any of this would act as a substitute for lead, which builds a "cushion" over time between the valve and the valve seat.Paul W.

Many people put at least half a quart of ATF in the OIL shortly before (about 100-250 miles) changing the oil as it has high detergent and will "scrub" crap out of the oil system, especially if the vehicle has been stored for a long period of time.
