I did rewire a 51 Mercury completely several years
ago. The main thing to remember is to lay out the harness on top of the
old one while still installed in the car. Then one at a time replace each
wire. This took me just 30 days working evenings and on weekends. I
was trying to make it to a tour and had to get new wiring before I went.
All the under hood wires were bare and black with corrosion. Everything
worked perfectly. Take your time. The only problem I had was with
the extra wires for the optional equipment that was not installed on that
car. My 56 is also in the same boat. I plan on getting a new harness
later this year & spend the winter rewiring. This car has lots
more gadgets than the Merc did.
