Re: IML: '68 Ash Tray Light

I don't have my Imperial at home, but I believe it might be the same lamp
that illuminates either the clock or the ignition key cylinder, which is why
it's not labeled as a separate fixture in the wiring diagrams.

OH, wait, it can't be the ignition lamp, as that only illluminates with the
front parking lamps (middle position of headlamp switch) and turns off with
the full headlamps.

Despite what Dick says, the Data Guide specifically calls out an ashtray
light as standard, and the owner's manual lists it in the bulb chart as
"included with instrument cluster" (and it lists a separate lamp for the
ignition switch, so I'm thinking it's shared with the clock).

If so, it would need to illuminate through a hole in the ashtray well, which
one would think would be blocked by the upward retracting ashtray door. But
a close look at some of the pix in the FSM show a little tubular thingie in
the ceiling of the ashtray well, visible with the door open and directly
below the clock.

By the way, I'm basing this all on my '67 and its manuals, but I imagine
that's something common to both years. And Dick could be right. I'd trust
him more than a Data Guide, and his cars are probably readily at hand. I'm
trying to remember if my 10-year-old pack of chewing gum that's in the
driver's ashtray has been illuminated when I've opened the door at night.

Question for you, Dave: Does your clock light up?

If you need me to check my car, I might be able to do so this weekend. Let
me know.
