Mercury used pushbottons in 57 adn 58. Edsil used them in the center of the steering wheel in 58 only. I think they quit because it cost more to have two systems, and Ford made a whole lot more cars, so they went back to steering column mounted levers.
Personally I think that the pushbuttons were actually safer than the shift lever.
